A user at the apfeltalk forums from Germany had ordered an iPhone 3G from Apple and that was what exactly he was expecting to be shipped. To his surprise, the handset received was indeed a iPhone 3G 8 GB but the packaging in which it was contained indicated something else. Interestingly, it was marked with iPhone 3GS 8GB label, instead of iPhone 3G. As we all know, iPhone 3GS is only available in 16GB and 32GB versions and not 8GB. So either the box tag had typographical error, or Apple might have mixed up its new packaging with the old stock.

In any case, this has created a big confusion on whether Apple is about to unveil an iPhone 3GS 8GB model at the upcoming January 26th event or not. It is possible that this move could be intentional to promote this new product before its launch. But what is the whole idea behind coming down in memory whereas Apple traditionally had always been doubling it each year. One possible reason may be the release of the upcoming Google Nexus One phone, and if Apple can come up with a reduced priced iPhone 3GS, it may leave its competitors in market far behind. We’ll have to wait till January 26th to see if this is indeed true or not. Source

For those still getting to grips with the world of “apps” these are simply applications that can be downloaded to an iPhone or iPod Touch, two of the most search for products this Christmas.

The iTunes store now has more than 90,000 of these applications, which offer games, city guides, travel planners, language dictionaries and music services. Some of these apps are free, and most cost less than £4.99.

And if you dop not own a iPhone, Nokia, Orange, Samsung and BlackBerry have all launched their own application stores – although the choice of products may be more limited.

Below are five of the best money-saving apps available.

1. Cheaper shopping

Red Laser this costs £1.19 and will scan any bar code for you then search for cheaper online prices using the Google product search. This is particularly useful when buying larger items such as televisions and fridges, saving you money and the hassle of shopping around for better deals. It will also scan a book then check for reviews or scan groceries and add it to its shopping list, so next time you visit the supermarket, you have a list ready.

2. Lower phone bills

If you get fed up paying 35p per minute calling premium rate phone number, then download the free “0870″ app. This converts 0870, 0845 and 0800 telephone numbers into normal rate landline number, eg those starting with 020, 0151, 0115 etc. These will either be including within your monthly call allowance or are substantially cheaper to call for those on pay as you go packages.

Mobile phone owners may also want to download Mobile Allowance, for 59p, this app gives you a comprehensive reading of your mobile allowance, showing phone owners how many free minutes and texts they have left. This is ideal for those who are prone to talking or texting too much, and going over their limit. Both talk time and texts are shows as a progress bar on your phone helping you keep track of your monthly usage.

The Eastman Kodak Company is certain that their new 1.4 micron sensor will have the ability to be put into some of the cheapest phones and plans to flaunt this fact at the Mobile World Congress later next week.

Combined with CMOS technology as well as Kodak’s own Color Filter Pattern (sic) technology, the KAC-05020 image sensor will produce excellent looking pictures even in poor lighting. Kodak says that this makes the 1.4 micron KAC-05020 better than 1.75 micron pixel CMOS image sensors. More..

CONVENTIONAL wisdom says developing competition in services markets by encouraging private sector participation (both local and foreign) brings large gains for consumers. The gains come in different forms, such as reduced service charge, improved service quality, variety of services and easy access to service. Liberalisation of the telecom sector has been especially welcomed by users because of the supply side constraints in the telecom sector. Moreover, the advent of mobile phone technology, with its unique features of 24 hour availability and instant access, created a huge demand for it.

Although liberalisation of the telecom sector was done in the belief that it would bring benefit to the consumers in terms of cheaper price and better quality of service, that has not always been the case. Contrary to conventional belief, telecom liberalisation resulted in negative consequences for some users in some cases. Liberalisation (especially fixed line telephone) sometimes causes higher prices for customers due to tariff rebalancing and result in reduced access.

In tariff rebalancing, long distance prices fall while (to maintain rates of return) line rentals (and often local call charges also) increase. For instance, in Australia, line rentals increased by 47% after liberalisation (during 1998-2000). In the Northern Territory of Australia, connection to the fixed network had dropped by 2.3 percent after liberalisation. Service standards had also fallen. Similarly, consumers could not reap the benefits of liberalisation (such as lower price) in the UK during 1984-1990 as competition was restricted between the British Telecom (BT) and the new entrant MERCURY (which was licensed to compete with the BT in some segments), and the liberalisation was partial. In 1991, duopoly policy was ended and entrance of new firms was allowed, resulting in intense competition and significant fall in prices, and more than 50% reduction in telephone fees. More…

Britain’s four biggest mobile phone operators used their own industry trade body as a forum for colluding to shut rival 3 out of the UK market, the High Court heard yesterday.

Lawyers for 3 levelled the accusation against top executives at O2, Orange, Vodafone and T-Mobile in the opening gambit of a £250 million claim against the four companies — the largest competition action of its kind to reach the UK courts.

Jonathan Sumption, QC, acting for 3, alleged that the other four firms also abused their dominant position in the market by using the five-day hand-over period for porting personal phone numbers in order to stitch together special retention packages for customers who try to leave their networks. More..

The first phase in a trial of an evolved version of today’s mobile phone radio access technology designed to deliver much higher wireless data rates has proven a success.

The LTE/SAE (Long Term Evolution/System Architecture Evolution) Trial Initiative (LSTI) launched in May this year has reported the successful delivery of the first in a series of test results aimed at proving the potential and benefits of LTE. LTE is being standardized by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) as a next generation mobile broadband technology.

The Initiative was founded by leading telecommunications companies Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, France Telecom/Orange, Nokia, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nortel, T-Mobile and Vodafone, and was recently expanded with China Mobile, Huawei, LG Electronics, NTT DoCoMo, Samsung, Signalion, Telecom Italia and ZTE joining as new members.

Initial results have confirmed that the technology will deliver high levels of data throughput both for stationary and mobile devices. In more detail, the group has confirmed that the LTE physical layer performance targets in terms of stationary and on-the-move peak data rates can be met. This confirmation was achieved using an agreed set of common transmission profiles, test procedures, and analysis methods. The joint tests were performed using prototype single and multi-antenna radio systems in both lab and urban field environments.
